Breaking the ice

Ever wondered why we say 'breaking the ice'? Because it is cold, stone-hard, yet, it sheds some light through, because well, it is transparent. Your goals are very much like this wall of ice. You can see through, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but you can never reach it, unless you break your way through. And during this process, you will find diamonds embedded in the ice, many happy moments, self-heartening things, but afterwards comes the darker side of the picture. All those hard decisions you have to make, which you wouldn't want to call good, nor ones which will make you happy or satisfied... The only correct word to describe those decisions is... Logical.
